Abstract
The infrared spectra from 800-1600 cm-1 of 28 anions (inorganic and organic) not containing hydroxyl group have been obtained in H2O and D2O. A significant solvent deuterium isotope shift up to 23 cm-1 occurs in most cases. Most of the shifts were negative (vH2O-vD2O negative), but the pyramidal and tetrahedral anions gave positive shifts. The shifts do not appear to have a simple interpretation; hydrogen bonding is clearly important, but other factors, such as the influence of the anions on the solvent baseline, must play a part.
