Abstract

As a comprehensive study of the factors which influence planning and design this thesis examines the markets for conferences and trade exhibitions in relation to size, diversity, distribution and other characteristics which affect demand. The nature and extent of facilities provided for this purpose and their patterns of use are also analysed as a basis for planning future requirements. Fundamental design criteria and the operational features of many of the facilities recently constructed in Europe, America and Asia are evaluated in order to establish technical standards for conference and exhibition facilities generally. Particular consideration is given to environmental requirements including the variations in standards which apply in different countries. In light of the study findings, analyses are made of the feasibility of investment in conference facilities in hotels and in other centres.
