Abstract

It is important for the thermal performance of an induction motor to be predicted correctly if the machine is to operate safely and reliably throughout its design life. The importance of accurate temperature calculations in design work is critical from both a commercial and safety perspective. In a standard cage induction motor, the highest temperature rise rates occur in the rotor conductors when the machine is stalled. Prediction of these temperatures can be broken down conveniently into three equations: the calculation of the maximum conductor currents, the determination of the distribution of this current within the rotor conductor, and finally the translation of the consequent loss distribution into a temperature rise.
