Abstract

A study of Mahler's earliest surviving musical works from two unfinished song fragments, through the Piano Quartet movement and three early songs, to Das klagende Lied. Contains a detailed analysis of the works, and a comprehensive account of the compositional chronology and the several sets of revisions made to Das klagende Lied by the composer.
